Running with purpose. Patrick’s marathon journey.

February 15, 2024 Posted in: News

Team Domenica candidate, and keen sportsman, Patrick has challenged himself to complete the Brighton Marathon this April. By running for us, not only is he building resilience and rising to a personal challenge, but he’s also fundraising for the innovative programmes we provide. In doing so, Patrick is making a meaningful and lasting impact for both himself, and his peers with learning disabilities.

Patrick’s marathon preparation has been going brilliantly so far. He’s been balancing his athletic training with class-based learning and a supported internship at The Queen’s Hotel Brighton. Practice makes perfect, so you’ll often find Patrick catching the bus and running the long way home. He’s even taken a trip to London to train with his cousin Charlie. Check out the video below to see them in action.

Patrick’s mission

Our programmes offer people with learning disabilities the space, time and support to reach their full potential. Thanks to our training, our candidates are able to develop the independence, confidence and skills needed to access meaningful employment and thrive in life. In fact, since opening in 2016, 81% of our young people have achieved paid work.

During his time with us, Patrick has gained work experience in our training cafes, as well as with local employers across Brighton. He has followed his passions, attained qualifications, and built faith in his own abilities. These amazing experiences have inspired Patrick to give back and help others with learning disabilities find their path.

In particular, Patrick is fundraising for our Wrap Around Programme which provides ongoing support for candidates once they gain employment. This provision works, with over 95% of our young people remaining in paid work for at least a year. This is compared to the national average of just 25%.

The Wrap Around Programme relies on support from our community. If you’d like to help us continue this vital service for candidates like Patrick, why not join him in signing up to run? Find out more here.

A fundraising hero, back at Brighton Marathon Weekend 2024…

During his time at Team Domenica, Patrick has completed a number of fundraising activities. Last year alone he ran the BM10k and played 500 holes of golf, raising thousands of pounds for our work. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s now challenged himself to Brighton Marathon. That’s 26 miles, weaving through the vibrant street of Brighton, with everyone cheering each other on. He says:

Last year I ran the 10k but this year I wanted a bigger challenge. My training is going well – I’m just running. I’m really looking forward to Marathon Day.

We’re so excited to watch Patrick run on April 7th. As well as offering fundraising advice before the race, our volunteers will be out in full force on marathon day. We’ll be shouting Patrick’s name and celebrating his success, every step of the way.

Best of luck to Patrick, and all our amazing runners. We’re so proud of all that you’re doing. To help Patrick reach his fundraising target, donate to his JustGiving page.
