Ask the candidate: June talks fun, friendships and futures

June 4, 2025 Posted in: News

June is in her first year at the Specialist Further Education College, and Brighton-based learning disability charity: Team Domenica. From crafting delicious coffees in our training cafés, to completing work experience with our employer partners, June makes the most of every opportunity.

We asked our followers on Instagram and Facebook to share questions they’d like ask and we posed these questions to June. In this interview, she opened up about her passions, her plans, and what being part of Team Domenica means to her…

Hi June! Our first question is all about you – What do you like doing in your free time?

Well I like going places with my mates – like if someone says do you wanna go somewhere I say yes – but it has be planned properly, because of my brain.

I like seeing my Team Domenica friends. We go to the pub and I sometimes have a soft drink, but sometimes have a beer. I love being out, or going to festivals, yeah I like keeping busy!

And what are your biggest passions?

My biggest passion is probably for one getting a job, but also helping my mates achieve stuff too.

That’s really lovely June, what about the future? What are your hopes and dreams?

I’d like to get a job as I’d really love to live a shared flat where we all pay a bit of rent with my friends. It’s nice because I’d always have people around me then. If I could choose anywhere, I think I’d quite like to work in a sandwich shop!

If you think about Team Domenica. How does it feel to come here?

I am very happy and at home here. The staff are really open and are always smiling, and they talk to you like an adult. It makes me smile.

What would you say is your favourite part of Team Domenica?

That’s hard. I like lots. I think my favourite part is being able to not be scared. I like that I have friends and they help me. I like being an adult and having a hot drink in the classroom. I like it all.

Now that you’ve started your third work experience placement, can you look back and tell me about the ones you’ve already completed?

Well I’ve really enjoyed them. The staff were super nice at Brighton College and I really liked the environment of Pelican Parcels. I enjoyed making a difference by preparing the clothes for people who needed them… like cutting thread or lint rolling – oh and debobbling; that was great!

And finally, what would you say to someone starting their employment journey with Team Domenica?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, it will happen and it’s okay. In the cafe, if anything goes wrong, don’t be afraid of telling a mentor. They are great and they will help you. If you’re having a bad day, they will listen. They will help you get better at skills.

It’s like Georgia [Training Mentor] said at Enrichment – give it a go! Even if you think you don’t like something, still try. You might surprise yourself!
