Saturday 21 March is World Down Syndrome Day and we’re celebrating the theme “Together Against Loneliness.” It’s a reminder of how important connection, community and inclusion is for everyone, especially for those with Down Syndrome.

At Team Domenica, we see every day how meaningful relationships, shared experiences and supportive environments can help our young people build confidence, independence and a sense of belonging. This year, we’re proud to share Taylor’s story so far.

Taylor’s journey at Team Domenica

Taylor is currently in his first year at Team Domenica on our Supported Employment Programme and is developing his hospitality skills and gaining valuable knowledge.

As part of the programme, Taylor is completing a work experience placement at Pizza Pilgrims. “I like doing front of house, the tills and taking orders from customers. And giving them their drinks and food. It’s made me want to work in a restaurant in front of house.”

Through regular mentoring sessions with his Training Mentor, Taylor continues to work towards his goals. Together they catch up, review progress and build his confidence. This week he has also had a really positive review posted saying “Taylor was friendly and attentive”. His mentor said:

Taylor has been enjoying his first placement: Pizza Pilgrims! He has been learning skills in a new setting such as taking orders, putting orders through the till, making pizza boxes, and making drinks! Taylor has demonstrated great customer service skills by greeting customers and performing check-backs

Together Against Loneliness

For Taylor, being part of Team Domenica is not just about gaining workplace skills, it’s about being part of a community. He enjoys building friendships, sharing experiences, and meeting other people “like him”.

When asked about how having Down Syndrome makes him feel, he said:

It makes me feel excited and it’s very nice to meet friends with Down Syndrome… I’ve got that at Team Domenica.

In a survey by Sense, 77% of disabled people aged 18 to 34 reported feeling lonely. The connections and friendships our young people create are powerful. They help reduce isolation and build confidence, showing exactly what Together Against Loneliness means in action.

Sports, friendships and community

Outside of his training at Team Domenica, Taylor has a lot of hobbies and enjoys football, swimming and table tennis.

He plays for the Brighton Down Syndrome football team and is part of the Nam Yang martial arts community. He discovered his talent for kickboxing through our enrichment provision, and he has quickly developed his skills and confidence in training.

Through Nam Yang he has also made new friendships with coach Sam, assistant coach Harry, and others in the group. It has been wonderful to see Taylor’s confidence and self-esteem grow.

He said “At football I play with my friends and go to tournaments“. Being part of these clubs is so important in continuing to build inclusive environments that reduce isolation and bring people together.

World Down Syndrome Day 2026

This World Down Syndrome Day, we’re reminded that when we create spaces where everyone feels welcomed and valued, everyone benefits. Through stronger connections, greater understanding and shared experiences, we can continue creating a more inclusive world.

We are so proud of what Taylor has achieved so far, and we cannot wait to see what comes next in his journey.

If you, or someone you know, is a person with Down Syndrome who would like to gain paid work, find out more about our programmes here.

Together, we can build a more inclusive future and stand ‘Together Against Loneliness’.
