Theo's Story
Theo joined our Supported Employment Programme in 2022, ready to learn and excited to start his workplace journey. During his first year, he built on his skills and experience, and we learnt about his passions and abilities. Our employment team then used this information to match him with his ideal internship, at his ideal workplace: Pizza Pilgrims, Brighton.
To ensure the role was a perfect fit, Theo visited the restaurant before his first shift. He and his manager, Sam, had the opportunity to discover how they could help each other thrive. They discussed Theo’s new responsibilities, his needs, and how they could work together to create success.
This support meant that Theo could hit the ground running in the workplace. In fact, he quickly started working on the bar and till, greeting customers and cleaning tables. He even had a go at making pizzas and devised his own shorthand for taking orders! When asked about his supported internship, he said:
I’m loving my placement. [On my first day] I was nervous about coming into a new place and learning new things. But now I feel comfortable and great! The people I work with are really nice and if I ever feel unsure Lucy [my Job Coach] is there to help me feel confident.Theo, Team Domenica candidate
Team Domenica’s approach is all about collaboration. So, when Theo found serving large tables intimidating, his Job Coach – Lucy – supported him in finding the best route to success. She helped with his skills development and offered advice to his colleagues.
She also relayed this information to his teacher who recreated the restaurant in his classroom (complete with Italian music)! This meant that Theo could practice his skills in a familiar environment and, in doing so, his confidence grew.
With the support of his team, and Theo’s drive to deliver the best, Theo was offered a paid role in June 2024, making him the second candidate to gain employment at Pizza Pilgrims, Brighton. Read more about Theo’s journey by reading this news piece.
Working with the candidates has been really rewarding. They’ve added so much to our team, and it’s been great seeing them grow. Before working with the guys, we worried we might get things wrong, but there’s nothing Team Domenica won’t do. Their support and communication has been fantastic.Sam, Manager at Pizza Pilgrims, Brighton
