About This Policy

This policy explains how we keep people safe from extremist ideas and terrorism. It is written in Easy Read to help people with a learning disability understand it.

What Prevent Is

  • Prevent is a UK rule that helps stop people being drawn into terrorism.

  • Terrorism is when people use violence to try to change things.

  • Prevent is about helping people early, before anything bad happens.

Why Prevent Matters

People may be at risk if they:

  • Feel lonely or upset

  • Want to fit in

  • Trust people who try to trick them

  • Spend a lot of time online

  • Are unsure what is safe or unsafe

Prevent helps protect people from dangerous groups or individuals.

What Staff Must Do

Staff must:

  • Look out for signs that someone may be at risk

  • Listen if someone is worried or confused

  • Report concerns to the Prevent Lead

  • Support people kindly and respectfully

  • Not judge or blame anyone

Signs Someone May Need Help

A person may need help if they:

  • Talk a lot about extreme groups or violence

  • Say they want to hurt people

  • Share scary or hateful messages online

  • Suddenly change their behaviour

  • Spend time with people who encourage hate or violence

  • Say they want to join a dangerous group

These signs do not always mean someone is in danger, but staff must still tell the Prevent Lead.

What Happens When There Is a Concern

  • Staff talk to the Prevent Lead

  • The Prevent Lead may speak to safeguarding teams

  • The person at risk will be offered help and support

  • The aim is to keep the person safe, not to get them in trouble

How We Support People

We support people by:

    • Talking about their worries

    • Helping them understand what is safe and unsafe

    • Supporting them to make good choices

    • Helping them stay connected with positive people and activities

    • Keeping information private unless someone is in danger
