Betsy's Story

Before Team Domenica, Betsy’s job prospects were limited. Despite wanting paid work, and having a drive to succeed, she did not have the experience or opportunities needed to secure a permanent position. With the help of our programmes, Betsy was able to achieve the independence she’d always dreamed of and she now works at the Mercure Hotel on Brighton seafront.

It’s hard to put into words the difference Team Domenica has made, not only to Betsy’s life, but to our family’s. Like most parents we worry about what happens when we’re not around, but seeing her move into paid employment has been nothing short of amazing.

Betsy in the workplace - A Team Domenica success story

In her first year, Betsy developed her employability skills in our classroom, training cafés (Café Domenica) and on external work placements. Thanks to the encouragement of our staff, Betsy was able to embrace the challenges of each role and began to see herself as a capable adult. The following winter, she progressed onto a supported internship within the Breakfast Team at the Mercure Hotel.

She initially found the demands of customer service difficult. She was nervous about making mistakes and struggled when the hotel became busy. Over time, however, Betsy grew in confidence and mastered her tasks with the support of her Team Domenica Job Coach and colleagues. One of her proudest achievements was working on the hotel’s podium – a demanding role that involved greeting guests, managing queues and giving directions.

By May 2023, Betsy had gained the confidence to work independently. She excelled in her role, building strong relationships with guests and colleagues alike. Recognising her progress and talent, the hotel soon offered her a paid position as a Front of House Breakfast Assistant.

We are all so proud of Betsy! As with any journey, there have been some ups and downs along the way, but Betsy has always tried her best. She has become a pivotal part of her team, working confidently and independently. Her colleagues have been wonderful to work with and Betsy is fortunate to have such a supportive team by her side.

Ruth, Post-Internship Manager at Team Domenica

Today, Betsy is known for her excellent customer service and dedication. She loves the independence a job has given her, and proudly talks about her responsibilities if someone asks what she does…

Team Domenica helped me get paid work at the Mercure Brighton with lots of friendly and kind people who understand my needs. Having worked there for a year now means I have a lot more money to go out with [my friends]. I am much more confident; I’m not afraid to talk to customers or have a go at new tasks.
